An emulsifier is what you need when you fail to combine two conflicting components of food such as water and oil. Trying your luck mixing these two immiscible liquid will just be a total waste of time if you dare not use any emulsifying agent. A food emulsifier is your best partner in creating a more presentable dish that may include the use of sauces and creams, bakery and dairy products. Any substance containing an emulsifying agent will not only result to a more appealing prepared food by providing a more thorough mixture of the conflicting ingredients but it also prevent bacterial growth.

Emulsifiers may either be obtained naturally or chemically produced. Some of the foods that contain natural emulsifiers are the biscuits, cakes, soft drinks, margarine, coffee creamers, caramels, eggs, milk and extruded snacks.

Natural emulsifiers are best acquired from the frequently used raw materials found even within your own kitchen. Palm oil, soybean oil and even rapeseed and sunflower oils are considered as naturally occurring emulgents. Nuts, berries and leaves are also raw emulsifiers. Honey, mustard and even sugar also belong to this category. These substances once incorporated in your food preparation will prolong the shelf life of your foods by keeping the oil and water components combined.

Eggs are the oldest and widely used natural emulsifiers ever known. Egg yolks are commonly used to emulsify mayonnaise. Milk, which is a mixture of fats and liquids, are also popular known to best combine immiscible properties of two conflicting liquids.

  • Lanolin

Lanolin is fat obtained from the sheep’s water-free wool and acts as an emulsifier to crèmes. It is also an outstanding product for skin by providing provitamin.

  • Cetearyl glucoside (and) cetearyl alcohol

This is an emulsifier produced by combining sugar, palm seed and coconut.

  • Beeswax

Beeswax combined with bee propolis is considered one of the natural emulsifiers which are adopted to be a consistently emulsifying agent.

Emulsifiers are not only used to produced a more homogenous mixture of two conflicting substance. These are also been a great help in the production of various beauty products such as lotions and creams. Natural emulsifiers, such as beeswax and borax, combined with the ingredients of these lotions and creams, produced great results for skin care products. Beeswax and borax are considered the most widely accepted and undisputable natural emulsifiers in creating the best lotion and cream there is.

 

Sodium borate, commonly known as borax, was first discovered over 400 years ago in some parts of China and western United States. This naturally occurring mineral will not be considered as an emulsifying agent on its own but requires the combination of the beeswax to produce an emulsion.  

Beeswax, on the other hand, may be an independent emulgent, and has been widely used in various cosmetic and skin care products not only due to its softening and soothing properties but also great in the retention of moisture in the skin.
